Improving Water Quality

Energy Crops Can help improve Water quality and prevent flooding

Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) were introduced to try and improve water quality by reducing pollution from nitrates.

Short Rotation Willow Energy Crop provide barrier strips intercepting run off and preventing pollution of water courses.

Energy crops slow down run off and intercept sediment thus assisting flood prevention.

Woody crops can improve water quality and prevent flooding.

Energy crops can provide an effective local measure for reverting the rising nitrate levels in groundwater. They achieve this in a number of ways:

• Provide useful barrier strips that intercept run off and prevent pollution of water courses from diffused sources e.g. fertilisers, pesticides etc
• The crop slows down run off and intercepts sediment
• The less frequent trafficking on the land means that there is a much lower incidence of nitrogen leaching compared to crops under typical arable management.
